The girl I was treating sure had a spit fire tongue. As she lashed out at Fenris my brows rose a few inches in slight surprise, though Fenris wouldn't have done anything rash. He was a calm wolf, from what I could see, and I wasn't expecting him to cause her harm or retaliate in a way that would make him seem like anything but a gentleman.
”Most of the ones I know were so full of themselves and their sex that when they walked, they seemed surprised that the desert sands didn’t part in front of them.”
I could not help myself but chuckle at her remark. "Not all of them, though, dearie." I murmured. My comments were far and few between, mostly just little blurbs of conversation as I patched her up. So far I had everything set except her ribs, which I needed more gauze for. I looked over to see a cotton bush, it's seeds long expired but the stalks holding rigid and brittle. I could possibly do something with it... However, I knew there were better options.
With another trip back over to the small grassy patch, I sniffed around for the Lopelia flower that was native only to Traum. It held a purple blossom that was poisonous to the touch but it's stamen, when eaten, could aide with the regeneration of her bones. I had almost put my nose right into the center of the flower as I turned my head to the left, but thankfully I stopped myself and proceeded to pluck it by the stem.
Carefully, I made my way back towards the two who had been talking while I was away. I laid the blossom on a small, flat rock and cautiously teased the stamen away from the middle of the flower. I held it in on of my paws and took it over to the brown female. I placed it on the ground in front of her muzzle, and nudged her. "Eat, it will help your bones." I said simply.
”I am Kayden al Howaitat, daughter of Serra al Abbadi. I came here looking for my mother. She said she was going to the island of legends, Traum. We all thought she was crazy; everyone knows it doesn’t exist. But I think she may have believed this place to be the island in the tales.”
I came back just in time to hear her name. "Kayden, a beautiful name. Perhaps you came from the same place I have; your surname sounds familiar." I said. My name was Egyptian and hers was Arabian, but the desert lands were very intermixed. As a jackal, though, I was not expecting to have recognized many names, but the Abbadi's sounded a tad familiar, though not extremely.
"What is that stuff?"
I chuckled. "It is a Ginseng-Aloe lather. It will help the skin around your cuts. Don't eat it, though. It isn't a wonderful thing to ingest." I turned to Fenris.
"But it is a pleasure to meet someone with such intelligence, Nefertiri."
"As yourself, Fenrir." I said simply, allowing the two to converse once more, though not before telling Kayden, "All I have left to do is wrap your torso, and that is optional. If you can handle broken ribs for the next couple weeks, that would be fine. Tight fitting gauze may help a little, but you would have to rewrap them, and they don't stick to fur very well."

It was too soon to tell if there were any changes, but Kayden imagined that there were; that she was already on the mend. ”All I have left to do is wrap your torso, and that is optional. If you can handle broken ribs for the next couple weeks, that would be fine. Tight fitting gauze may help a little, but you would have to rewrap them, and they don't stick to fur very well." ”In that case I think I’ll pass. I recover fast enough- I’ll be all right,” said Kayden. Her comment about males brought a chuckle from Nefertiri. ”Not all of them, though, dearie." |
"That statement is very true. Even here males seek out women for their own pleasure. Myself... No... I have never done such a thing. Any fae I have ever been with was a willing experience. I would think it rude to force such a thing on another." Kayden looked up at the wolf. Was he lying? She had no idea, no way to be sure. Was it possible for males to be so different? ”I’m… glad to hear it,” she said, a little uncertainly. Fenrir continued. "I see no honor in such things... I just know that it would be, how you say, impolite to take the life of a wolf that is already on the cusp of dying. And in my ventures I have found that faes are much more resourceful when it comes to fighting then males. Males, after all, think purely on rage and anger which makes their fighting skills lacking any sort of challenge. Women are much more intelligent when it comes to combat." ”Not my father,” said Kayden. ”He was emotionless. Cruel, merciless as the sand devils, but he never seemed to feel anger or love or anything at all. I can’t deny you’re right, though. I’ve never met a man I couldn’t outsmart somehow. Although I think you might just give me a run for my money,” she admitted with a wry smile. Nefertiri walked back over, carrying a small purple flower. Kayden eyed it curiously. Nefertiri told her to eat the stamen, which would help her bones. Kayden sniffed it. She recoiled sharply. ”Something so pretty… I thought it would smell like it looks,” she said, wrinkling her nose at the sour aroma. She stuck out a hesitant tongue to the stamen. She shuddered as it went down her throat- it tasted as bad as it smelled, if not worse. Nefertiri listened to her introduction. "Kayden, a beautiful name. Perhaps you came from the same place I have; your surname sounds familiar." Kayden shrugged. ”I’m an Arab. Our pack lived in the Bedouin lands. I don’t remember seeing many other wolves than other Arabians, but from time to time a gray wolf passed by. Maybe you knew my aunt, Nadira- she traveled a lot.” Fenrir’s question was far more practical-minded. "So, you're saying you just jumped into the ocean and swam here? How does one born of the sand know how to swim? You are rather fortunate to be alive. Yet another reason as to why I have no intentions of ending your existence at this moment..." ”Golly, thanks,” said Kayden dryly, ”I’m so glad you’ve decided not to kill me. Now I can take that nap, I guess.” She spoke before she could think, and as soon as she realized what had come out of her mouth, she clamped her mouth shut, fighting the sudden urge to laugh. One of these days I should learn to shut up, she thought. ”As a matter of fact, my pack spent the summer in an oasis. We were nomadic, but that was the one place that always had water and shade. Most of the pups learned to swim in the water. And I had a few opportunities to learn on the way here, too. Besides, the channel here really isn’t that far across. The mist hides it from here, but maybe a mile, a little less, from here, there’s land.” Kayden realized Fenrir was right. If she stopped to think about it, what she had done was nothing short of remarkable. ”But I see your point- maybe I have stronger survival instincts than I thought I did. I guess I did it because the alternative was dying on some beach. I mean, I think if I had the strength to choose which of the two beaches I was going to die on, I might as well choose this one. I made a gamble, and it paid off.” [/blockquote]

It was a talent that seemed to be over looked by many. She worked diligently and without question when it came to the remedies that she was using. There was no hesitation. This was the sign of a true healer, not just a student but one that had the potential of being a teacher. A rare trait indeed. He wondered if she knew how lucky she was to have such skills. Drawing in a breath, he let it out in words. "My dear, may I ask as to where you acquired such talents when it comes to those involving the art of healing?" he queried raising a brow slightly. "Not many know of these things. And you seem to have quite the knowledge of what you are doing."
Then his attention turned back to the one born from the sands. It was growing ever more obvious to him that she was not used to being spoke to in the manner she was speaking to her. Perhaps in the desert females only had two jobs. Birthing whelps and keeping the male's taste satisfied. Though he would not jump to conclusions on a race that he did not know everything about. His eyes closed as a small smirk shifted onto his lips. "Dear Kayden... It seems to me that you do not know whether to judge my words as truth or lies," he offered as once more his gaze fell on her form. "I have no reason to lie to you of what I speak. Like I said I would consider such things as rude. I am not some young pup that longs to keep his loins satisfied. Those days have long since passed me," he added as his tail flicked behind him.
Then something that she had said caught his attention. He drew closer to her and looked her over. "Your father you say was emotionless... Perhaps him I have met before. You see, I do not dwell in the realm of emotions. They slow me down. I do not waste my time on such things," he stated looking deeply into her pools. "My killings are not of passion or anger. Not even pleasure. It is just something that I do. Like breathing. I do not understand pity or compassion..." he paused for a moment as he rested himself before her letting his tail curl around his hind legs. He almost completely blended with the sand.
Emotions never made sense to him. He watched others go through their lives suffering from such things. They were hinders that slowed the reaction times. It was true that he held no pity towards wolves but it was also a fact that there were those that were safe from his 'cleansing' of the lands. "And please, it would be an insult against me if you think that the reason I am not ending you is out of pity. You survived the hardships of the ocean. To me you deserve a chance to fight back," he offered. "Normally, my meetings with other with the blood of wolf running through their veins is much shorter and less words are spoken..." He paused again once more letting her speak.
So she did have some experience when it came to swimming but still not that much. She gambled her life with the wind and surf and came out on top. Interesting. Very interesting. Perhaps she had a role to play in this world yet. Only time would tell. His attention turned back to the healer. "Nefertiri, you spoke of also coming from the sands... Where exactly do you hail from?" he questioned wanting to get to know both desert dwellers before it came time for him to part company with them.
