She looked at Memphis, studying the expressions that ran across her face, studying the thoughts that she could pick up from watching her. They were…similar. Hardly. Lilitu was able to admit that they had few shared commonalities, but they still seemed worlds apart in her mind. After all, here Memphis was, a powerful, well-rounded Alphess, and next to her stood Lilitu, the screwed up, messed up Crusader that ran under her command.
She remembered so much about her past that she did not want to remember, her best friend…slain by the claws of Lilitu’s own brother, and the murder that she had committed in order to avenge that friend. The powerful rage that exuded from her father, when he learned she had murdered the heir to the Alpha position, to avenge a wolf that he saw as a whelp, a useless piece of scrap meat that the pack was better off leaving behind. But perhaps he only thought that because she was friends with his daughter.
It was a lot of things to remember all at once, as the memories flashed behind her eyes, a little bit of pain began to flood through her face, no matter how hard she tried to fight it. The anger at her brother came back, and she clenched her claws, shaking her head and rolling her shoulders back to regain a grip on herself. ’Come on, Lilitu, what the fuck are you doing? Letting yourself go like that, it is fucking ridiculous. Get a grip on yourself, you damn fool.’ She snarled mentally to herself. She felt hypocritical for thinking those things, after what she had just said to Memphis, but it was necessary. She had to control herself.
Then, she noticed Memphis holding her gaze, and she steeled herself, making her eyes calm, making it look like she knew what she was doing, she wanted her Alphess to be better, she wanted to help. She had to help, it was her duty.
”Thank you, Lilitu. You are right, realization is often key. I, myself, to be honest have never been in a war. My fighting skills are fair, but being in the midst of so much death and chaos wil be a first and a test for me. While these recent months, the Lucifer’s has grown quiet. The whole island has grown quiet, too quiet…”
The Alphess trailed off and Lilitu tilted her head to watch her, offering her a sympathetic smile. ”I wish I had some sage words to offer you, on the prospect of your first war, my lady. Unfortunately, I do not. They call war the Kraken for a reason…but I have reason to believe that you will pull through just fine. The death and chaos, admittedly…it will haunt you for a while, certainly. But it soon fades and just becomes another memory. As long as you know how to fight…knowing how to fight is all that matters…”
She, too, trailed off, remembering when her father had said those same words to her. ‘Knowing how to fight is all that matters.’ Loyalty was certainly another important aspect, certainly. But as long as you know how to fight…you have a good chance of survival. She saw the frown, and the attempt to make it a smile, and Lilitu flashed a small grin, a knowing one, of sorts.
”I also have not seen my son in a long time. Or Kirill for that matter. Yet I’ve felt it’s vital I stay among the pack lands, ready for the war call. Even though have of me wishes to seek out them both. Sorry again, for I am showing quite the weak mindedness to you.” Lilitu let out a small chuckle and shook her head, ”No no, my lady. Do not apologize. I see no weak mindedness within you. Only honesty. It is not wrong to wish to see your family, those you hold closest to you. I know I do sometimes.”
Memphis smiled as she moved closer, so she did not move away, and so the Alphess spoke again, a smirk growing on her face, ”I know Kirill wished to move the pack to some place new after the war. I’m looking forward to it, really. After the war, who knows what will come of this island. But Kirill plans to take new land at the prime time.”
Lilitu nodded, musing over the fact of a move, ”Yes, it does seem wise to move, after all, I have a feeling things will return to the way they used to be after this war is over…and perhaps the hostilities will be turned on us. It is not my place to give approval, but I must say that it is indeed a good idea.” And this was the truth, but she did worry at how the elder wolves, the ones more used to staying here would react to the plan.
